Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County

In February, WLNF gave a $2,500 grant to Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County. This grant will enable the organization to offer an additional class of English as a Second Language (ESL) for this year.

“Sullivan County has a culturally diverse population with 28% of our residents speaking languages other than English at home, and about one in five members of the Sullivan County community lack basic literacy skills,” said Angela Dutcher, executive director of Literacy Volunteers.

Currently, Literacy Volunteers offers three classes for ESL learners at their facility on North Street in Monticello. These classes are open to all and run once a week for two-hour sessions.

“With the recent influx of immigrants into our community, the need for ESL classes is greater than ever,” said Mrs. Dutcher, “and the Wolf Lake Neighbors grant will allow us to meet this need.”

WLNF believes in targeted philanthropy and supporting local programs looking to expand, said Jean Eifert, a director of WLNF. “We are pleased to join the other community supporters of Literacy Volunteers. Making a difference at a local level is so important,” she said.
